In this episode, we will shine the spotlight on nutraceuticals that tackle hair loss or promote hair growth.

One example is Hair + Push Plus, a capsule supplement that claims to maintain hair growth and lustre. The product, formulated with B vitamins, vitamin E, biotin, millet extract etc, can be found in the Singapore market.

India's Soul Strips, similarly, has found opportunities for hair loss supplements in the South East Asia region.

The company, which develops and sells only oral dissolvable strips, will be launching Repair – a hairfall control supplement designed for women.

Repair will be first launched in the Middle East where the firm already enjoys a presence, but the firm is also intending to pursue the South East Asian markets of Singapore, Thailand, and Malaysia via this product.

"There is a lot of interest for hair products. Women are very conscious about their hair in the Asian market. Therefore, it [hair products] can explode in places especially in Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia as well as Vietnam," said Avinash Madhavan, director, Soul Strips.

Key bioactives used in the product include French ingredient firm Robertet's proprietary millet seeds (Panicum miliaceum L.) extract marketed under the trademark Keranat, biotin, and vitamin D3.

Miliacine, a molecule found in millet seeds, is said to promote cell proliferation in follicles and improve hair strand anchoring to the scalp.

A 12-week RCT involving 65 women have shown that the supplementation of Keranat could significantly reduce hair density in the telogen phase. This is the "resting phase" which lasts three to four months when hairs are shed from the scalp.

Moving forward, the company is planning to develop a different hair supplement for men in hairfall control as well as regrowth of hair.

"That will be a different formulation, because men's hair health has got to do with the testosterone as well," Madhavan said.
