The significant association between weight loss and premature death in older adults in El Paso

EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) -- As much as people may celebrate their own weight loss, it is not always healthy. A new study shows weight loss in older adults is associated with early death.

The study, published in JAMA Network Open on Monday, looked at 16,703 adults who were 70 years old or older in Australia and 2,411 adults in the United States who were 65 or older.

Men who lost between 5 and 10 percent of weight had a 33 percent higher risk of death compared to those who kept a stable weight.

The study found that there is a "significant association" between weight loss and death in older adults. This does not necessarily mean losing weight is a direct cause of premature death but is a warning sign for conditions like cancer and dementia.

Underlying chronic health conditions can also trigger weight loss in older adults by impacting eating habits. Mobility issues and medication side effects can also affect weight.

It's important to monitor weight change, and if you see a decrease in weight with no change in your routine it's important to see your doctor as soon as possible.
